WHAT IS A TEACHING ARTIST?

Eric Booth is a leading Teaching Artist in the USA. He has been teaching at Juilliard for 13 years, Stanford University, NYU, Tanglewood and Lincoln Center Institute for 35 years, and The Kennedy Center 14 years. Eric is the first person to receive an honorary doctoral degree (New England Conservatory, 2012) for teaching artistry. In his article which he presented at the Lincoln Center Education Teaching Artist Development Labs in January 2017, he articulates the difficulties of terming what Teaching Artist do, and provides a framework for understanding the work that takes place in educational and community settings providing example of programs and their desired goals. I love his description that TA’s are “activating the “intrinsic” artistry in participants.”
